Introducing Café Andes Amazónicos (CAA)
This group of small scale coffee growers was set up in January 2000 in the Cajamarca region of Peru. The CAA was created to bring a modern business vision and make it suitable for the many small coffee producers of the northeastern region of Peru. We strive to incorporate economic, social and environmental responsibility into coffee growing. We aim to continue developing ourselves and contribute to a sustainable development in our multicultural and multi-ethnic Peruvian coffee growers’ society.
The company is currently present in the regions of Cajamarca, Amazonas and San Martín (in the basins of Alto Mayo, Amojú, Chunchuca, Chinchipe, Utcubamba and the Marañon river). A total of 85,000 hectares of coffee (mainly the “típica” variety) are part of the group, which are managed by over 50,000 members, all small sized coffee producers with an average of 2-3 hectares per producer. Our members also grow cacao, bananas, beans and soy.
Our mission
CAA’s mission is to improve conditions for the sustainable development of quality and specialty coffees through corporate business management. With its new management style, based on dialogue, transparency and social equity, CAA has formalized strategic alliances with the organization ECRAID NOR (Centro Rural de Agro Ecología para el Desarrollo del Nor Oriente) and small coffee producers who are members of the Café Tercer Milenio program.
We intend to strengthen this program through strategic long-term corporate alliances with exporting clients. The program aims at the sustainable development of specialty coffees. In this way we aim to meet the quality and public health standards and to achieve sustainability in the supply chain.
About Café Andes Amazónicos and UTZ CERTIFIED
For us, the UTZ program is a way to incorporate sustainable growing practices and the certification is the international recognition of our organizations approach towards coffee production. Improving and certifying our coffee crops and our field practices, allows us to access a broad commercial market and this gives us alternatives to find the best market for our coffees.

Peru is a highly varied country, rich of ancient culture and natural heritage. Imagine having desert, tropical rainforest, a beautiful stretch of Andes and a stunning coastline in one country: Peru has it all!
Moreover Peru is also known to produce lovely Arabica coffees. Around 6% of the agricultural land is used for coffee growing, and out of the 28 million inhabitants, over 1 million people are involved in coffee growing. Most of Peru´s coffee is grown along the forest-clad eastern slopes of the rugged Andes mountain range, at an altitude between 900 and 1800 meters. This makes that Peru only produces Arabica coffees of general high quality. The majority of the coffee is produced in three major producing areas in the North, close to Ecuador (Piura - Moyobamba), in the Center (Chanchamayo) and South-East, near to the border with Bolivia (Cuzco - Puno).
Impact on our organization
Working according to the UTZ CERTIFIED program, changed our practices and level of control over the processes. It has increased our knowledge with regards to sustainable coffee production and allowed us to implement a quality control system. With this quality control we are able to offer an environmentally and socially responsible coffee production management. We have been able to better understand the needs to manage coffee production with greater responsibility and to implement a commercial approach based on an efficient quality control management.
We have developed institutional co-operation agreements with different public and private organizations which contribute to the Café Tercer Milenio program through our NGO partner ECRAID NOR.
