Population: 5.5 million people
Capital: Managua
Produced coffee volume: 105 million kilo in 2007
Type of coffee: Arabica
Nicaragua has a varied landscape with tropical beaches, volcanoes and an enormous lake that is home to the world's only freshwater sharks. The moist climate, the altitude and the volcano soil create perfect conditions for coffee growing. Big-scale coffee production started in Nicaragua around 1850 and by 1870 it became the principal crop of the country. Nicaragua is known for producing good quality Arabica coffees. There are thousands of small-scale coffee producers around the whole country. The Jinotega and Matagalpa regions are usually marked to deliver the best qualities. These regions have a humid tropical forest climate and are rich with volcanic soil. This contributes to the unique flavor of the Nicaraguan coffees.
