Fazenda Sertaozinho

Fazenda Sertaozinho is a farm in the South of Minas in Brazil. This is a coffee area known for its beautiful Arabica coffees. Our fazenda grows the best quality coffee and we take great pride in also taking care of social and environmental quality. We’ve been certified since July 2004 for the total area of coffee production (370 Ha). We produce on average 720000 Kg of coffee per year.

Sustainability at Fazenda Sertãozinho

Fazenda Sertãozinho is in a mountainous region in the southern part of Minas Gerais, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, annual average temperature of 19ºC and annual average rainfalls of 1,600 mm.
The farm's geographical conditions and excellent climate contribute to a microclimate that is favorable to produce specialty coffees. The farm has 300 hectares of rain forest reserves with centennial trees. Water resources are also protected, with careful maintenance of the ciliary woods.
The property is managed by agronomist José Renato Gonçalves Dias. The oldest planting field was formed in 1948 and continues producing. Organic fertilizers produced in the farm are used to maintain the plants' balanced nutrition. The objective is to preserve the microbiological life of the soils that are very fertile.

Social projects

One hundred and sixty permanent employees work at the farm. They are assisted by health care and hospital plans with no limitations. The farm invests in its employees' training and professional improvement. The employees' children are enrolled at a school in the property.

Brazil is the giant in the world of coffee! Not only is it the world´s largest producer and exporter of coffee - Brazil produces totally 30% of the world´s coffee supply - it is also the second largest coffee consuming country worldwide! Brazilians are real coffee lovers and describe the word "breakfast" even as "café manha" which means morning coffee. The best known coffee from Brazil is Santos. This coffee originates from the plants that where first imported to Brazil. This plant was introduced to Brazil by French Guiana in the early 18th century in the region of São Paulo. Only shortly after doing so, coffee was spread through the rest of the country. Nowadays the three main coffee growing areas in Brazil are Sul de Minas in the southern part of Minas Gerais; Mogiana; and an area called the Cerrado, several hundred miles north of Minas Gerais. In contrast to other Latin American countries the fast majority of the coffee farms in Brazil are large estate farms.

Coffee processing system

Fazenda Sertãozinho's coffee is prepared in an environment-friendly way. Plantation handling, harvesting and drying are performed manually. Coffee harvesting is selective, and only the ripe cherry beans are picked.
After the coffee is harvested, the beans are transported to the cherry pulper and then to the terraces where they dry under the sun. When the drying process is well in progress, cotton cloths are placed on the coffee lines to protect the beans. No mechanical dryers are used during the drying process.
When the coffee reaches 11% humidity, it is taken to wooden bins, where they rest for at least 30 days. All coffee processing - from harvesting to re-processing, including classification by sieves, by density, electronic selection by color and manual selection - is made in the property.

Quality garanted

Fazenda Sertãozinho is certified by the "ISO 9001/2000 Quality Management System". This means the total control of coffee quality, with documentation and background of each lot.
