Why UTZ CERTIFIED?
UTZ CERTIFIED has a proven track record in the development, implementation and management of a traceability system for the coffee and palm oil supply chains. We are now expanding this expertise onto other commodities, such as cocoa and tea as well as investigating other potential commodity chains. Based on this expertise, UTZ CERTIFIED has been contracted as the RSPO's exclusive partner for all its supply chain traceability requirements and has developed, implemented and is currently managing a traceability system for RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil for the models Mass Balance and Segregation.
While it is not possible for an entire sector to become fully sustainable overnight, UTZ believes that promising progress has been made so far, paving the way for a successful future in sustainable palm oil production and trade. Making mainstream commodity supply chains more transparent is an important tool to stimulate sectors to work towards more sustainable practices.
UTZ CERTIFIED, the RSPO and Sustainable Palm Oil

In 2004, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was formed in response to growing speculation on palm oil production and its negative social and environmental effects. Members include oil palm growers, oil processors, food companies, retailers, NGOs and investors. All recognizing the need to work together towards a global supply of palm oil produced in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
A certification and traceability system for produced sustainable palm oil is a clear and decisive step that will lead to increased transparency in the supply chain. It will decrease the environmental and social impacts considerably. For producers it aims to achieve better quality, higher productivity and improved (cost) efficiency. For all actors in the supply chain it will offer the possibility to demonstrate how they are working towards more sustainable business practices. At the same time it will provide consumers with the assurance of responsible production.
UTZ CERTIFIED offers traceability through its web-based traceability system. By means of a unique traceability number, all members in the palm oil supply chain (up to the final refinery) are able to confirm their certified sustainable palm oil purchases and demonstrate their commitment to the production of certified sustainable palm oil.
With the first plantations already certified and the first shipments arriving in Europe, the RSPO and its participating members have already reached important milestones in the process of achieving sustainable production (economical, social and environmental) of the world's palm oil.

About Palm Oil

Palm oil is the world's most widely produced vegetable oil. In South-East Asia it is an important cooking-oil for most people. In Europe it is an ingredient in approximately half of all packaged goods such as shampoo, margarine, fish fingers, detergent, soap and ice cream. The production of palm oil (which comes from the oil palm fruit), however, has come under scrutiny for some time now. There are social and economic challenges facing the industry as well as significant environmental issues. Today's consumers are increasingly aware of this and expect their favorite brands to take responsibility. With a certification and traceability system in place, the journey has begun towards achieving a fully sustainable supply chain for the world's palm oil industry.
